Hands-on Neuroscience Curriculum and Research

Award-Winning Neuroscientific Initiatives and Research for Academia

Together with its university partners, NYU utilizes Emotiv EEG headsets and research software to engage high school and college students in hands-on learning and college readiness, all while gaining a new understanding of how brains function, learn, and synchronize in the classroom.

BrainWaves

The New York University (NYU), in partnership with the University of Connecticut (UCONN), introduced the BrainWaves program, bringing innovative Emotiv EEG brain technology to the high school STEM classroom. Mentored by college students, high schoolers learn how to build, conduct, analyze, and peer review research projects. Evaluation data indicates that the program led to significant increases in students’ research self-efficacy and college readiness.

Brain Synchronization Studies

A 2018 NYU and Princeton study using Emotiv EPOC headsets found that retention of information is impacted by student-to-student and student-to-teacher brain synchrony. Emotiv Epoc 14-channel EEG headsets were used to simultaneously record neural activity from a group of 12 high school students and their teacher during regular biology classes held over a semester. Each of the six lessons alternated between videos and live lectures, and students completed short quizzes after each session to assess their retention of the content. Videos boosted retention and student-to-student synchrony, while lectures fostered greater synchrony with teachers for students who felt socially close to them.
