An Opera of the Mind

Dr. Ellen Pearlman created “Noor,” an interactive “brain opera” that adapted to a performer’s mental states as she interacted with narration, displays, and audience members. The mixed-reality performance art installation paid tribute to Noor Inayat Khan, a Sufi Muslim Princess and British covert operative inside Nazi occupied France during WWII.

How do brain-computer interfaces work?

EEG-based BCIs are characterized by the technique of using non-invasive EEG electrodes to measure brain activity and translate the electrical signals into commands.

BCIs detect changes in brain activity measured through an EEG. BCI technologies then relay these signals to machine learning algorithms. The machine learning algorithms have been trained to pick up on EEG brain activity associated with specific emotions, actions, and expressions. When the algorithms identify matching EEG brain activity, the BCI can translate these into external commands to control a device (such as a computer cursor, robotic arm, or wheelchair).

Leading the BCI Revolution for Over a Decade

Emotiv Epoc X 14-channel saline wireless EEG headset revolutionized how people interacted with their world. Our non-invasive BCI interface enabled anyone to develop brainwave-controlled games, wheelchairs, and performance art, while elevating classroom lesson plans to the next level. EEG technology had been around for decades, but was cumbersome, limited, and expensive. So, when Emotiv introduced a completely wireless, research-quality EEG headset at a fraction of the cost, we democratized EEG and ushered in a new era of contextual brain research and BCI applications.

As Emotiv has grown, we have proudly supported organizations as they leveraged our technology in educational, commercial, and philanthropic ways. From demystifying mental health alongside Sapien Labs’ Global Mind Project to helping children with disabilities through the BCI 4 Kids program at Alberta Children's Hospital, and raising awareness about distracted driving with the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), Emotiv is committed to developing and supporting human-centered technological advancements for the betterment of everyone.
